Schiaparelli Reimagines Paris Salon Style Inside Osaka Department Store

Schiaparelli has opened a new boutique on the sixth floor of the Hankyu Umeda Main Store in Osaka, marking the storied French house's latest retail expansion in Japan. Designed as an apartment-like sequence of rooms rather than a conventional shop floor, the space translates the Surrealist spirit of its Place Vendôme headquarters into a Japanese retail setting.

A Collaborative Design Approach

The boutique was developed jointly by Creative Director Daniel Roseberry and Swedish architecture firm Halleroed, pairing Schiaparelli's fashion identity with an outside design perspective. The interior draws on materials associated with both couture ateliers and modernist interiors: brushed stainless steel, high-gloss lacquered wood, custom sculptural furniture and extensive mirrored surfaces. The mirrors are a functional as well as aesthetic choice, intended to multiply light and perspective within a relatively compact footprint, a common strategy in boutique architecture where square footage is limited but visual impact needs to feel expansive.

Thematic Rooms Instead of Open Racks

Rather than organizing merchandise by category on a single open floor, the boutique is divided into distinct salons, each with a specific function:

  • A Boudoir dedicated to ready-to-wear garments
  • A separate Bag Room for leather goods
  • A private VIP salon reserved for bespoke appointments
  • An enclosed, fully mirrored chamber at the center of the plan built specifically to display the house's jewelry

This room-by-room layout mirrors how a private residence or historic salon might be organized, reinforcing the "domestic lens" the designers say guided the project. It also allows the retailer to separate casual browsing areas from more exclusive, appointment-only spaces without physically expanding the overall footprint.

What's on Display at Launch

To mark the opening, the Osaka boutique carries the Fall-Winter 2026 main collection and pre-collection alongside permanent "Iconics" pieces the house keeps in continuous rotation. Shoppers can find signature handbag styles including the Secret, Soufflé and Face designs, along with the anatomical jewelry and sculptural tailoring that have become hallmarks of Roseberry's tenure at the house. The boutique is open now within the Hankyu Umeda Main Store.
